In meiner Arbeitsgruppe untersuchen wir, wie Licht und Materie auf der Ebene einzelner Atome und Moleküle zusammenwirken. Indem wir höchst präzise und extrem stabile Rastersondenmikroskopie mit optischer Spektroskopie verbinden, schauen wir – ganz wörtlich – in einzelne Moleküle hinein.
Diese Optik auf atomarer Skala lässt uns Prozesse verstehen, die für die Photosynthese, die Umwandlung von Elektronen in Licht und die Quantenoptik zentral sind, und das mit einer Genauigkeit von weniger als einem Nanometer.

the one who looks inside molecules
In my research group, we study the interaction of light and matter at the level of single atoms and molecules. By combining extremely precise and stable scanning probe microscopy with optical spectroscopy, we quite literally look inside individual molecules.
This atomic-scale optics allows us to follow processes that are central to photosynthesis, to the conversion of electrons into light and to quantum optics – with a precision below one nanometer.
